We have a saying in our house for cold days. “It sure is a good day for hot chocolate!” Although we don’t get super low temperatures here in Southern Alabama, there are days that just call for a steaming mug of hot chocolate. I’m not a fan of packet hot chocolate so I began searching for the perfect homemade hot chocolate recipe. We finally found one that is pretty simple, doesn’t take a lot of time, and is so delicious. This is adapted from the Hershey’s Kitchens website. We use a little less sugar and a little less vanilla. The recipe we use is the one we are sharing below…

Ingredients:
- 1/3 cup hot water
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder
- dash of salt
- 4 cups milk
- 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Instructions:
1. Stir together sugar, cocoa and salt in medium saucepan; stir in water. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture comes to a boil. Boil and stir 2 minutes. Add milk; stirring constantly, heat to serving temperature.
*IMPORTANT* Do not boil once you’ve added the milk
2. Remove from heat; add vanilla. Beat with rotary beater or whisk until foamy.
Yes, it’s just that easy, folks! Add your favorite toppings & enjoy. Some of our favorite toppings are marshmallows, whipped cream, peppermint sticks or candy pieces, mini chocolate chips, sprinkles & colored sugars.
This will make about five 8 ounce servings.
Make this homemade hot chocolate for your friends and family this holiday season and put a smile on their faces!
